Pietra Dura Plaque of a Cavalier and a Monk

Florence, Italy, c. 1880
Retailed by Pierre Bazzanti et Fils

An antique pietra dura plaque depicting a cavalier trying to get a drink out of a monk, made in Florence in c. 1880 and retailed by the famous firm of Pierre Bazzanti et Fils.

This plaque is curiously fine. Look closely and you will find a great amount of detailed work and delicately balanced tones and colours. A great deal of attention has been paid to the small things, such as the pattern in the tablecloth, and the light glinting off the turning on the monk’s chair. This is a great quality plaque that rewards close attention – a very nice thing.

Note that the frame is later, but works perfectly with the plaque and allows the retailer’s stamp to be seen on the reverse.
